Introduction to BREEAM

Introduction to the Application of BREEAM
(Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method)

Environmental Assessment tools (such as BREEAM and LEED) are in place to encourage design teams to apply sustainability initiatives to their proposed new-builds and renovations. However, do these tools go far enough? Can a building still be constructed, achieve a high 'sustainability' rating and not actually meet the needs of local and global environmental issues?

Zebra@Lion House, Alnwick, EnglandThe course is an opportunity to understand the BREEAM assessment methodology as well as be informed about the specific requirements of assessment schemes for different types of buildings.

Furthermore, it is an opportunity to gain an insight into the BREEAM 2008 assessment criteria and understand the changes that have been made to encourage a building to not just be designed with sustainability in mind, but also constructed. It is an opportunity to not only understand the theory behind BREEAM, but the application processes. This includes being aware of how sustainability targets can be achieved through innovative design approaches.
The aim of the course is to provide learners with an overview of BREEAM 2008 and provide an insight into the practical application of BREEAM. The learners will have an opportunity to learn how their sites can achieve the highest BREEAM rating possible.
